Come and join the youth group for a fun afternoon at the beach. We will meet at 1:00 pm at CLC, and then car pool to Huntington Beach. Bring your beach stuff, towel, swim suit, and your bike. We will take a bike ride along the beach on the path, for those who would like to. Plan to have a fire, and roast some hot dogs.

Please bring your own drinks, and something to share, chips, cookies, fruit, etc... We will need drivers, so let Pat, Christina, or Julie know if you are able to drive.

Please join us for a fun evening of bowling. We will meet at Lake Forest Lanes at 6:45 pm, and bowl untill 8:00 pm. Please let Christina or Pat know if you are coming, or if you need a ride. Please bring $8.00 to $10.00 for bowling.

Babysitting Fundraiser
Hey parents! Take a day off, relax, go to dinner or get some Christmas shopping done! The youth of CLC and several adult volunteers will be available from 10am to 8pm for babysitting at the church! We'll play Chadder the Chipmunk videos, play games, enjoy lunch and dinner and, most importantly, entertain the kids while you do what you need to do. Youth- sign up now to volunteer for this fundraiser for our youth group! Parents- call Alison in the church office to sign your kids up to be watched! Please sign your children up no later than December 1st!

High School Progressive Dinner
Our progressive dinner will be Sunday night, December 12th in place of youth group. We'll travel from home to home, enjoying appetizers, soup & salad and of course, the main dish! We'll come back to church for dessert and White Elephant gift exchange! We'll start at church at 5:00pm and be finished by 9:00pm. Please sign up by December 5th.

Southwest Community Center Gift Wrapping & Christmas Party
We'll travel up to Santa Ana on Wednesday, December 22nd from 1pm to 3pm to wrap gifts and distribute them to neighborhood children, who may not otherwise receive a Christmas present. Please come be a part of this special Service day. RSVP to Alison by December 12th.

Rose Parade Float Decorating
We'll be heading up to Pasadena on Wednesday, December 29th from 8am to 3:30pm to decorate floats for the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade! Join the Lutheran organization, Petal Pushers, for a fun day of float work! You must wear a Petal Pushers sweatshirt or t-shirt for the day- if you do not have one, we have many available to borrow. Sign up with Alison no later than December 26th. We will leave the church parking lot at 7:00am sharp!!!

I'm officially back from maternity leave (we welcomed baby William in July!) and it's back into the swing of things at CLC! Confirmation class and high school youth group begin again tonight and the events are starting to pop onto the calendar for the Fall!

Service Saturday & End of Food Drive
Our food drive for the Orange County Food Bank (www.ocfoodbank.org/) will wrap up on the 10th of July! On Saturday, the 10th we’ll be heading up to the OC Food Bank in Garden Grove to deliver our collected items, as well as volunteer in the warehouse with a few other groups! We’ll then receive a tour of the facility and learn more about how we can be reaching out to the community.

We’ll be meeting at church at 7:45am- our project begins at 8:20 and we’ll be working until 10:30. ALL AGES are welcome- there is no minimum age. This will be a wonderful opportunity for all youth. Please RSVP to Alison, as they can only accommodate 10-15 of us that morning. Adult chaperones needed!

Last night, at our last high school youth group meeting of the school year, we discussed this story, and how without challenges, we would remain stagnant.

The Great Barrier Reef, stretches 1,800 miles from New Guinea to Australia.
Tour guides regularly take visitors to view the reef. On one tour, the guide was asked an interesting question. "I notice that the lagoon side of the reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is vibrant and colorful. Why is this?"

The guide gave an interesting answer, "The coral around the lagoon side dies early because the water is still and stagnant, with no challenge for its survival. However, the coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves and storms with surges of power. It has to fight for survival every day of its life. As it is challenged and tested, it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces." Then he added, "That's the way it is with every living organism."

That is how it is with people. Because we are removed from nature working in air conditioned offices, living in concrete buildings, technology driven and seeking safety from the cycles of nature, we suffer from a false sense of control. When we are challenged and tested, we come alive. Just like coral pounded by the sea, we grow. Physical demands can cause us to grow stronger. Mental and emotional stress can produce tough-mindedness and resiliency. Testing can produce strength of character, faith, gratitude and a peace that surpasses all understanding.

So if you feel the winds of change and the waves are up and down, just tell yourself, "There I grow again."
